MTBF measures how long until failure; MTTR measures how fast recovery is. To improve availability, raise MTBF and shorten MTTR.
Most downtime starts at the physical layer
Business outages are reported at the application layer but often originate below it: a failing PSU, degrading RAID array, overheated rack, jittering fiber link, or an undocumented config change. OS-only monitoring discovers it late — often at the moment of failure, exactly when MTTR spikes.
So reducing downtime is largely about earlier detection and faster recovery at the hardware layer: component-level early warning, out-of-band rescue when systems crash, accurate asset data to accelerate diagnosis, and a clear link from component failure to the business service it threatens.

How do you calculate uptime?
Uptime % = (Total Time - Downtime) ÷ Total Time × 100. For example, 8 hours downtime in a year is ~99.91% uptime.
What do the "nines" in availability mean?
"The nines" describe uptime targets. Three nines (99.9%) allows ~8.8 hours downtime/year, four nines (99.99%) ~52 minutes, five nines (99.999%) ~5 minutes.
