Space Is Rarely What Runs Out First

A 42U rack fits 42U of devices — but its power circuit and cooling envelope usually saturate before space does. Real capacity planning balances all three per rack and is data-driven.

Rack Unit FAQ

How many inches and mm is 1U?

1U (one rack unit) is 1.75 inches, i.e. 44.45mm. 2U servers are 3.5 inches (88.9mm), 4U chassis are 7 inches (177.8mm).

How tall is a 42U rack?

42U of usable space is 73.5 inches (~1.87m) of mounting height. With frame, casters and top panel, a typical 42U rack stands ~78-80 inches (~2m) overall.

How many servers fit in a 42U rack?

Purely by space, up to 42 1U servers — but power and cooling usually run out first. Accounting for switches, PDU and cable management占用U, plus per-rack power budget, reality is often 20-35 units.
