PUE = Total Facility Power ÷ IT Equipment Power. PUE of 1.0 is the theoretical ideal, meaning every watt goes to IT.
What is a good PUE?
< 1.2
Excellent
Modern, well-optimized facilities often using free cooling
1.2 – 1.5
Efficient
Ideal target range for enterprise data centers
1.5 – 2.0
Average
Typical for older or mixed-use facilities
> 2.0
Poor
Significant overhead lost to power and cooling
Facility-level metrics need IT layer data support
PUE describes the whole facility, but to improve it, you must act at the device and rack level where energy is actually consumed. Without per-device power, rack-level thermal data, and placement info, PUE is just a reportable but unfixable scorecard.
