Nameplate Lies, Measurements Don't

Nameplate ratings may overestimate real power by 2-3x. Racks planned by nameplate are often half-empty while circuits still have headroom. Reading real power from BMC and per-outlet data from smart PDUs turns estimation into measurement — often revealing capacity you didn't know existed.

How to calculate rack power consumption?

Sum real power of each device in rack (servers × watts + network & storage). Current = Power ÷ Voltage, sustained load should stay within 80% of breaker rating.

What is the 80% circuit rule?

Electrical codes derate sustained loads: a 30A circuit should not exceed 24A sustained. Rack power planning that ignores the 80% rule will trip under peak load.

How much power does a server consume?

Typical 1U/2U servers draw 150-400W under normal load; high-density GPU servers can reach 2-10kW per unit. Nameplate ratings significantly overestimate real power — actual data from BMC or PDU is much more accurate.
