What PUE actually measures

PUE = total facility power ÷ IT equipment power. A PUE of 1.0 is the theoretical ideal — every watt serves IT. A PUE of 2.0 means for every watt delivered to IT, one watt is spent on cooling, distribution, lighting, and overhead. The biggest overhead sources are: power delivery (UPS, PDU, transformers, distribution losses), cooling (CRAC, chillers, pumps, fans — usually the largest), and other (lighting, security, building systems).

PUE pressure in the AI era

As GPU density and rack power keep climbing, cooling overhead rises with them, and PUE comes under sharper scrutiny from cost, sustainability reporting, and regulations like the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED). PUE is a facility-level average, so improving it requires action at the device and rack level where the energy is actually consumed. Key advantages: lower energy cost per business workload, support for sustainability and EED reporting, headroom for higher rack densities, fewer heat-induced failures, and data-driven cooling decisions.
